Experimental Investigation of Downhole Drillstring Dynamics

Al Shekaili, Ahmed.

In the downhole oil production, the case of hole shocks and vibration dramatically impacts the accuracy of drilling performance. It also limits the usage of the rock drilling equipment and influences the stabilization by the excessive applied feed force by the weight on bit (WOB) and the rotational motions in the drillstring. As the drilling goes deeper, the drillstring will get more unstabilized and consequentially lead to whether bending or vibrational problems in the drillstring which delay the drilling process. Entirely, all of these drilling problems can constantly interrupt the drilling process when the oscillations at any mode (torsional, axial and lateral) at certain natural frequency tend to become serious. These modes such as lateral, axial and torsional could lead to stick-slip, bit-bounce and whirling, respectively (see Figure 1). Furthermore, due to the nature of the rock formation, all of these factors become very complex and inefficient, and they will maximize the time and cost on the drilling process. Using the experimental investigation in this study, the drillstring dynamics have been studied to analysis and provide a certain method to tackle the drillstring shocks and vibrations either by controlling the drilling parameters or suggesting a specific tool. The major aim of this study has been achieved with the help of experimental rig setup and the drilling parameters have been investigated from tests. The vertical drilling will be experimentally considered to primarily understand and investigate the downhole drilling with the occurrences of stick-slip and bit-bouncing.
