This article presents an introduction to code switching, a controversial linguistic phenomenon that is found among bilinguals and multilinguals in formal and informal settings. Code switching is generally defined as language alternation, i.e. when the speaker switches between two languages or more in one single conversation. In specific, the article addresses some aspects that are related to code switching. These are: its linguistic definitions, its types, its existence inside the classroom and the functions that it can serve during the lesson. These will be derived from the findings of some studies.
