CREB3L2 is one of several Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) stress transducers that stimulate Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) to resolve the stress that is caused by the accumulation of mis-folded proteins in the ER. In addition, it has been shown that UPR is required in cells with high secretory capacity such as plasma cells. Using an in vitro model of human plasma cell differentiation and gene expression profile have revealed that CREB3L2 was highly expressed in B cells and plasma cells. Moreover, CREB3L2 is highly expressed in the ABC subclass of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a malignancy derived from B-cells undergoing the transition to plasma cells. The pattern of expression and its previously documented regulation by UPR suggest a role for CREB3L2 in the differentiation process.
