Mature and depleted oil fields require unconventional technical solutions for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). One such solution requires the use of centrifugal gas compressors to inject highly pressurised natural gas into the oil reservoir to enhance and maintain the oil flow, as well as compensate for any pressure depletion within the well. This paper presents a case study on a 9MW operational gas compressor that experienced significant vibration and performance problems during start-ups and shutdowns, thereby compromising production processes. Investigations on identifying the root cause of vibration and performance problems experienced in the field are presented. In accomplishing the former the influences of seal wear, bearing and seal clearances and hydrocarbon fouling on the compressor rotor-dynamic behaviour were explored. In conclusion, the conditions that led to the eventual failure of the compressor were successfully identified and explained.
