STRUCTURAL EQUATION MODELLING OF SAFETY BEHAVIOUR OF THE WORKERS IN THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR AT SULTANATE OF OMAN

The Sultanate of Oman is one of the fastest developing country and has spent 62.4 billion US$ during its 8th five- year plan and it is expected to spend 171.6 billion US$ in its 9 th five-year plan (2016-2020) on construction activities. The subject matter of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) became a popular topic of discussion in the construction sector in the recent past and become a necessity in the present day construction activity in order to prevent the fatalities of the labour force, injuries, occupational diseases and property damages and to improve the overall performance of the construction industry. In the assessment of safety of a construction project a study on certain determinants viz., Occupational Health and Safety Policies (OHSP), Management Commitment (MC), Health Care (HC), Training and Development (TD), Communication (Com), and Workers Behavior (WB) etc. need to be understood properly. The statistically modeling of the relationship among these factors will help in enhancing the effective safety performance of the construction industry and one such statistical model is Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). In line with this discussion, an attempt has been made in the present work to analyze the interrelationship among various determinants of safety performance of the construction industry at Oman, using Structural Equation Modelling. The data is collected from randomly selected 493 respondents in 124 construction projects at Sultanate of Oman. Relative importance index (RII) is used to rank the importance of the factors and components related to the OHS in construction industry in Oman. Statistical analysis is conducted in the following heads: (1) Cronbach’s Alpha Reliability Analysis (to test the reliability of the data), (2) Principal Component Factor analysis (to check on the squared correlations between the factors), (3) Correlation Analysis (to investigate the relationships between the factors) and (4) Regression analysis using stepwise method (for further investigation on the inter relationships among the factors). Two models using Structural Equation Modelling technique a) OHS WB model b) OHSP-WB-MNA model are developed and the model 1 describes how the different variables affect the safety behavior of workers and model 2 describes how to reach no-or minimal damage stage. The Cronbatch Alpha values obtained in the study have shown that the results had internal consistency. The composite reliability values for various factor groups studied have shown that the models proposed are reliable and trustworthy. The goodness of fit values have shown that they are nearer to GoF large validating the PLS model. Finally, the q2 values obtained in the study have shown that the models have predictive significance.
