Simultaneous Measurements of Temperature and Strain Sensitivity using two Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors

Recently, Optical fiber has been used in different fields. One of them is used as a sensor; specifically the Fiber Bragg Grating sensor (FBG). FBG based optical fiber has become an acceptable component to measure the sensitivity of different physical parameters. However, the temperature may affect the accuracy of measurements of sensitivity. In this paper, a new technique was proposed to overcome the temperature impact on the measurement of strain. This technique involved using two FBG sensors. One of them is sensitive to strain and temperature. The other FBG is sensitive to strain only. The effect of temperature was estimated by subtracting the strain effect from the second FBG sensor. Nevertheless, the results showed that the sensitivity of temperature without strain effect (independent measurements) was similar to the temperature sensitivity after removing the strain influence. Nonetheless, It is found that the change of 1 με caused a wavelength shift of 1.2312 pm at the central Bragg wavelength 1.55 με. For the FBG temperature sensor, the simulation shows that the Bragg grating sensitivity was approximately 13.55 pm /C and 0.7453 nm was the Bragg wavelength shift which is corresponding to a temperature change of 160 °C. More practical results of the dual FBGs are shown and explained in this paper.
