Review of Basic Renewable Energy in GCC Countries: Current Status and Future Vision

Moosa, Iessa Sabbe.

The availability of energy sources and long-term vision of providing renewable alternative resources are the most important factors for sustainable development in any country worldwide. In this article, the central renewable energy resources in GCC countries with more focus on Oman have been reported, such as solar and wind energy as the most abundant renewable resources in these countries. In addition, new types of energy sources have also been covered, which can be used in the GCC countries after non- fossil sources age, such as nuclear energy, magnetic energy, and hydrogen source. Also, the literatures showed that the efficiency of hydrogen production by electrolysis of water is in the range of about 75%. Sultanate of Oman and other GCC are among countries which receive high solar energy, 2.5 – 3.0 Wh/m2/day during winter season, and 5.5 – 6.0 Wh/m2/day during summer season as mean values. Some data of wind speed with respect to time for three provinces in Oman was analyzed (Muscat, Sohar, and Al Buraimi), and the result showed that Al Buraimi province has the highest annual mean value of wind speed of about 7 m/s. Furthermore, very essential information has already been mentioned about wind, nuclear, magnetic, and hydrogen sources. The study found that the GCC countries should have to utilize rational polices regarding of fossil availability sources, and to look upon the future of renewable energy resources to accommodate all future challenges in this regard timely. This paper contains important information about the status and prospects of renewable energy in GCC for researchers, investors and decision makers.
