sand filter is an important process and a traditional and use of sand filter as a method considered cheap, it is often used for remove contaminants from water and wastewater treatment plant. The aim of work was to study the use of aeration and then the sand filter in the removal of organic matter from Water River. River water samples were collected from "Sorkheh Hesar Canal" east Tehran/ Iran and subjected to aeration process, then to sand filter. The experimental filter consisted of a column height 60 cm, a diameter 5cm; the sand granules occupy 50 cm of the original length. Treatment of sand filter leads to the significant removal of organic matter such as chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon). Also, filtration through sand filter caused a removal of coliform, fecal coliform. search results within 110 days proved that aeration then the sand filter can be removed COD, TOC, and coliform, fecal coliform by 82, 80.4, 63, 62.9 % respectively.
