The aim of this study was to investigate the date palm terminology as used in the Sultanate of Oman as compared to the Egyptian terms as a reference. Result has shown that there was a considerable difference between the terminologies in the two countries. A nomenclature with all relevant terms concerning date palm management and husbandry was extracted from several interviews conducted in two agricultural regions in Oman (Barka in Al-Bātina coast and Al-Ħamra in Ad-Dāxiliyya) during the summer of 2007. The result has also shown little difference in terminology between the two locations revealing interchangeable use of the terms. This was mainly due to the nature of the date palm crop in Omani society and its importance for the Omani population. It is suggested that future research should use the approach of taking a single subject to extract dialectal differences and/or information and to investigate the factors that influence dialects as such.
