The current research paper aims to demonstrate the concept of Textual coherence in “Dalā’il Al-Iʿjaz” (Intimations of Inimitability) by Abd al-Qahir Al-Jurjani. The main factor that engaged us to consider this concept through Al-Jurjani’s is what I found that Al-Jurjani has looked at Textual coherence from a different angle. In his study of the “Inimitability” of the Quran, he introduced the theory of “Nazm” (The theory of Construction); where he investigated Arabic syntactic structure and grammatical principles from a semantic frame of reference. He considered the coherence of meanings and structures in different grammatical levels: words and sentences, in addition to the sequences of sentences in some cases. Moreover, as in Al-Jurjani’s perception, the textual coherence is developed on grammatical and pragmatic basis to frame multiple structures: deep one and surface structure of a speech. Related to this, he studied the contribution of coordination, referral, and semantic harmony in textual coherence. Yet, there are some attractive ideas that were introduced by Al-Jurjani and they are still need more attention from researchers. For example, his idea of the coordination of one whole structure to another whole structure, and one semantic unit to another, and the separation in being a strategy of textual coherence.
