As renewable natural resource base, the fisheries sector in the Sultanate of Oman includes a wide range of activities of socio-economic significance and, therefore, has a key role to play, amongst others, in supporting food security initiatives, both nationally and in the region. In this context, this paper demonstrates the contribution of the fisheries sector to the national and regional economies as well as the sector’s role in food security and nutrition. Also, the paper highlights some of the strategic approaches that have been taken into consideration by the Ministry of Fisheries Wealth to promote development and effective management of the sector that would lead to sustainable use of the resources and increase contribution to food security. The paper concludes with the remark that the attainment of sustainable fisheries through effective management practices is a first-order condition for supporting the country’s food security program.
