Research in the nineties—the decade of the brain—has brought new insights into the pathophysiology, impairments, functional limitations and disabilities involved in brain injury. ese may provide a better understanding of the mechanisms of functional recovery following brain damage, and have kin- dled hopes for more effective rehabilitation.7, 8 It is instruc- tive to review some of the pertinent medical history and then the recent medical progress in our understanding of the response of the brain to injury.
